The 8th West-Ukrainian Legal Forum of the Ukrainian Bar Association, that traditionally brings together lawyers from all over Ukraine to discuss the most pressing issues of the modern legal life, was held in the warm and hospitable Lviv on 31st May-01st June 2018.
«Matviyiv and partners» attorneys at law acted as an exclusive general partner of the event.
The first day of the Forum was held at the Sheptytsky Center. Andriy Stelmashchuk, the President of the UBA and Bohdan Prah, the Father-Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, addressed the participants in a welcoming speech.
Symbolically,that the first session was entitled «Realities and Prospects of Legal Education»,speak of which was Roksolana Kostur, partner, attorney of the Matviyiv and partners.
Under the supervision of Ivan Horodskyy (coordinator of the UBA Commission on Legal Education and Director of the UCU Law School), Roksolana, along with other participants in the discussion, talked about the quality of law education; the readiness of the legal community and the legal schools for reform and the differences between the young and older generations of lawyers. The conclusion is that in order to improve modern vocational education, it is necessary to introduce a foreign language as a language of instruction, constant exams for the maintenance of qualifications and reduction of the number of law schools.
The second-panel discussion “Results of the Supreme Court” included the following topics for discussion: the evolution of law, the organization, and results of the work of the Supreme Court and the notion of “precedent in Ukraine.”
Participants of the first Forum day continued their informal communication at a glass of champagne in the restaurant «Muscat».
Bank Hotel – location in which the second working day of the Forum was held. According to the tradition, Andriy Stelmashchuk, the president of the UBA and invited guests – Marianna Vilshynska (head of the staff of the Lviv regional state administration), Helena Payonkevich (director of the Lviv City Council Legal Department) and Roksolana Kostur (Head of the UBA Branch in Lviv Oblast), said introductory remarks.
Moderator of the first session “Novels of the Procedural Codes” was Serhiy Matviyiv, Managing Partner of Matviyiv & Partners. Questions that were considered in this discussion: novelties of procedural legislatio69n in the field of securing the suit, the role of the prosecutor’s office in the new trial, the latest practice of the Supreme Court and the legal conclusions of the ECtHR, the important aspects of the removal of judges in a new way and the law «Masks show STOP».
The following four sessions discussed topics:
– Corporate Law Notices: Assessing Recent Changes and Reviewing Next Steps;
– Actual questions of the lawyer. The crisis of the profession. Is it possible to quickly upgrade? (special report);
– International legal aspects of doing business;
– Judicial and extrajudicial antirider activities. Antirider Commission of the Ministry of Justice.
After working part of the Forum, the participants met at the Presidential Reception, which was held at the Lviv Historical Museum “Italian Courtyard”. Guests took a glass of wine to share their impressions and emotions with each other.
